PARENTING SKILLS WORKSHOP SERIES

What is the PSWS Workshop?

The Parenting Skills Workshop Series (PSWS) was designed by Cornell Cooperative Extension in Ithaca, New York.  This parenting program consists of seven workshops designed to assess, build, practice and utilize key skills for effective parenting.

Through the use of many different types of educational tools, each participant will become comfortable with the key skills used in the PSWS.

Any person providing parenting to a child is welcome to attend the PSWS.  This will include:  Parents, Step-parents, Grandparents, Guardians, Aunts and Uncles.  Foster parents…. The list goes on.  We welcome and encourage diversity in our workshops.

Who Runs the Workshop?

PSWS is facilitated by Longwood School District Elementary School counselors.  PSWS is designed for parents in different “levels” of parenthood (new parents, seasoned parents, parents of young, old or mixed age children.)  Groups with this diverse group of parents often enriches and adds a level of peer support not otherwise found.

How long is this Workshop?  The workshop is seven sessions long, and each session will take place during the dates of 4/20 -6/1 for 60-90 minutes.

Do I have to attend all sessions?

Success with the PSWS depends on attendance.  Each session will end with a skill and the following session session will pick up with information from the previous session.  Missing one group will set the participants back.  However, we do understand that emergencies will arise.  While we hope that you will attend all sessions, you must attend at least 5 of the 7 sessions to receive your Certificate  of Workshop Completion.

WHAT WILL THE WORKSHOP COVER?

The workshop will cover 5 basic parenting skills:

“Encouragement” - Helps parent and child to focus on positive qualities.

“Can Do” Gives parents a constructive behavior management skill

“Choices”  Teachers parents how to share problem solving and decision making with their children.  Additional focus on behavior management.

“Self-Control” - Guides parents in developing techniques for managing their own anger.  Focus on stress management.

“Respecting Feelings” - Encourages parents to hear, respect and respond to their children’s feelings.

HOW WILL I BE ABLE TO USE THESE SKILLS?

The ultimate goal of the PSWS is to provide skills to be used in “real-life situations.”  Unlike some parenting programs, which teach skills to be used once an ideal environment has been achieved, PSWS reinforces the use of skills in the “here and now.”
